Sunday 9th September 2007 - Poynton FC Under 14's Vipers 2-3 Poynton FC Under 14's Juniors - Stockport Metro League (Division Two) The first day of the season, Poynton 'A' were away to
Poynton 'B' Vipers in a derby fixture. The first half was a close fought
affair with chances falling to both sides. However, it was Vipers who
stuck first and despite some decent chances for the 'A's the score at
half time was 1-0. The second half saw Poynton 'A' pressing for the
equaliser, which duly came as the result of a penalty. Dan Jones converting.
The 'A's were applying most of the pressure but were giving the ball
away carelessly.
Sunday 16th September 2007 - Poynton FC Under 14's Juniors 3-4 Reddish Vulcans Under 14's - Stockport Metro League (Division Two) Today's match was a very closely fought game, with both teams playing some good football. Reddish opened the scoring in the first half, but James Quinn, back playing for us after a two year absence due to injury, scored twice to make it 2-1 to Poynton at half time. The second half saw Reddish even the score to 2-2. Poynton went in front with a Tom Sheedy goal, but once again Reddish evened the score. Poynton put the pressure on Reddish and had lots of chances, but just couldn't find the back of the net. With just two minutes remaining, Reddish managed to break through the Poynton defence and make the final score 3 4. A good performance from Poynton who were unlucky to concede the final goal. Man of the match was Sam Porter for his solid defensive work.
Sunday 23rd September 2007 - Stockport Junior Blues U14's North 3-5 Poynton FC Under 14's Juniors - Stockport Metro League (Division Two) PJFC travelled to Brinnington Park today for an afternoon
kick-off against the top of the table team, Stockport Junior Blues North.
With key players missing, Poynton would need to play their very best
against the league leaders. The home team were coming under consistent
pressure from a very lively Poynton midfield, and it was only a matter
of time before the deadlock was broken and Joe Clay put the visitors
1-0 ahead after 15 minutes. Further Poynton pressure followed and Conor
Young made it 2-0 from close-range after a corner from Harry Nicholas.
Shortly before half-time, Conor Young made it 3-0 with a superb free
kick from 25 yards.
Sunday 30th September 2007 - Poynton FC Under 14's Juniors 4-3 Bollington United Under 14's - Stockport Metro League (Division Two) Poynton took on Bollington this morning after a good
5-3 victory the previous week. The boys soon went ahead through a Joe
Clay goal but the visitors were playing the better football, so it came
as no surprise when Bollington scored the equaliser midway through the
first half. All the pressure was coming from the Bollington team and
Poynton looked out of sorts. Bollington's pressure rewarded them with
two more goals to make the half time score 3-1 to the visitors. The
boys started the second half in much better fashion and were working
harder and playing better football. Conor Young's thirty yard free kick
sailed over the keeper to reduce the score line to 3-2 and with ten
minutes to go Tom Sheedy's fine effort drew the scores level.
Sunday 7th Ocotber 2007 - Droylsden Juniors Under 14's 2-4 Poynton FC Under 14's Juniors - Stockport Metro League (Division Two) Poynton travelled to the league leaders this morning, to play a team who had won all their previous matches this season. From the first whistle, Droylsden went on the offensive and in under 2 minutes the boys went 1 behind and again the boys looked as though they had only just got out of bed! However, the score was soon level after Joe Clay scored with a high shot into the roof of the net from 15 yards. Droylsden hit back 10 minutes later, but Poynton were playing the better football and Joe Clay went one-on-one with the keeper after a fine passing move, only to be hauled to the ground just outside the penalty area. The resulting Conor Young free kick was wide of the mark, but Poynton were coming more and more into the game and it was only a matter of time before the equaliser came, again from a Joe Clay effort rebounding off a defender to draw the score level. The second half saw Poynton take more control of the game and start to boss the midfield. Dan Jones was moved into a more forward role, and soon put Poynton into the lead with a well-taken effort from 10 yards. The home team rallied briefly when they were awarded a dubious penalty decision, which was superbly saved by Ryan Jennings, and justice was seen to be done. Poynton's tails were up and there was only one team in it now. Soon after Dan Jones scored his second, and Poynton's fourth to round off an excellent overall performance from the team. Performances of note from Tom O'Gara, Dan Jones, Ryan Jennings, Harry Nicholas and Jonathan Rockley, but the Man of the Match award went to newcomer Joe Hibbs for his tremendous effort and application. He never stopped running all game and played some great football. Well done Joe!
Sunday 14th October 2007 - Poynton FC Under 14's Juniors 0-2 Mountfield Rovers Under 14's - Stockport Metro League (Division Two) Poynton took on Mountfield Rovers at home this morning,
bidding to extend their recent unbeaten run of matches. After only 5
minutes Joe Clay was injured and was unable to play any further part
in the match. The early stages of the first half were fairly even, with
Poynton applying some decent pressure at times, but errors and some
sloppy play from Poynton was evident and it was no surprise when the
visitors took the lead midway through the first half. More pressure
from Mountfield resulted in a penalty being awarded, but Ryan Jennings
repeated his heroics of last week and again saved superbly to deny Mountfield
a further goal. Mountfield applied consistent pressure and Poynton were
lucky to end the half at only 1 goal behind.
Sunday 21st October 2007 - Woodley Albion Under 14's 'A' 2-3 Poynton FC Under 14's Juniors - Stockport Metro Cup (Preliminary Round) After kick-off, it took Poynton less than 5 minutes
to take the lead with a neatly-taken goal from Joe Clay, who finished
neatly with a clever lob over the keeper. Poynton were having the better
of the play, but there was good football from both of the teams in a
fairly even first half. Harry Nicholas had to retire mid-way through
the first half due to a shoulder injury. At half time the score was
Woodley 0 Poynton 1. The second half saw Woodley come more into the
game and Poynton neeeded to defend for long periods, but against the
run of play, Poynton broke away and a neat move saw Joe Hibbs score
his first goal for Poynton with a well-taken shot from just inside the
area. Woodley were quick to respond and scored a well-headed goal from
a corner. Midway through the second half, Poynton broke again and Dan
Jones followed up a Conor Young effort to tap home from close range.
Woodley responded with one more goal before the final whistle, the final
score ending with a 3-2 victory for Poynton.
Sunday 11th November 2007 - Apollo Juniors Under 14's 0-1 Poynton FC Under 14's Juniors - Stockport Metro League (Division Two) Poynton made the short journey to Hazel Grove this morning to play Appollo Juniors, hoping for a win after going down to Woodley the previous week. Apollo started the brighter team and applied most of the pressure in the early stages. Poynton gradually gathered themselves and came more into it, and by half time were starting to play some attractive football. The game remained goalless at the break. Poynton started the second half and immediately took control of the game, pinning Appollo back and forcing them to defend deep in their own half. Midway through the half, Joe Hibbs made it 1-0 to Poynton with a short-range effort, after some confusion in the Appollo area. Poynton didn't quite manage to kill the game off, but had several good efforts from Sam Petts and Joe Clay. Appollo raised their game briefly towards the end, but Poynton looked comfortable and the match finished with a well-earned victory to Poynton. Performances of note from Conor Young, Joe Clay, Sam Petts and Jonathan Rockley, but on this occasion, the Man of the Match was awarded to Tom O'Gara for his outstanding performance in the centre of defence.
Sunday 18th November 2007 - Poynton FC Under 14's Juniors 4-3 Burnage Rangers U14's - Stockport Metro League (Division Two) Poynton took on Burnage Rangers this morning and from the first whistle the boys came under heavy pressure from a Burnage side who although propping up the league, looked determined get a result. When Poynton eventually got hold of the ball, they played it around to good effect, but Burnage kept up the pressure and eventually took the lead, leaving Ryan Jennings no chance to save. Poynton were coming more into the game, and on the stroke of half time, Tom O'Gara poked the ball home from close range after good work from Joe Clay and Dan Jones. After the break, Poynton had a wind and slope advantage and pressed forward to score 2 more goals in quick succession, the first after a determined run from Dan Jones saw him finish sweetly from 10 yards out. Joe Clay made it 3 shortly after a sweeping move cut the Burnage defence in two. Burnage rallied again and made it 3-2 from the penalty spot, before grabbing an equaliser with 10 minutes left on the clock. In the dying seconds, a good through ball to Dan Jones saw him score a high volley into the roof of the net to seal the points for Poynton. Performances of note from Sam Porter, Sam Petts and Dan Jones, but the man of the match award was given to Sean Lyons for his excellent efforts after coming on as substitute in the second half.
Sunday 25th November 2007 - Stockport Dynamoes Colts U14's 5-5 (4-3 pens.) Poynton FC Under 14's Juniors- Stockport Metro Cup (Round 1) Poynton travelled to Stockport Dynamoes this morning to play in the first round of the Stockport Metro Cup and straight from the kick-off the boys went on the offensive and within 5 minutes Dan Jones had put Poynton 1 ahead. The pitch was heavy going, but even so, Poynton were playing some very nice passing football and it was no surprise when, from an in-swinging corner, Sam Petts put Poynton 2 up. The home team pulled one back on the stroke of half time to make it 2-1 at the break. Dynamoes pressed forward from the first whistle and within minutes had equalised. The home team were coming more into the game, but on a break-away, Harry Nicholas gave Poynton the lead again, but the visitors soon hit back to draw the score level at 3-3. In the final 10 minutes, Sean Lyons made it 4-3 to Poynton with a well-taken header and Poynton looked to be on the road to victory, only to concede a penalty deep into injury time which was converted to draw the scores level 4-4 at full time. 10 minutes each way of extra time kicked off and the first period ended goalless. 5 minutes into the second period, Dynamoes took the lead and the game looked to be ebbing away from Poynton. In the dying seconds, Poynton were awarded a corner and the whole team, including keeper Ryan Jennings, headed for the Dynamoes goal. The corner was fired in by Harry Nicholas, and Sam Porter was on hand to score his first ever goal in 6 years of junior football at Poynton. So with the scores level at 5-5 after extra time, only a penalty shoot-out could separate the teams. After both teams had taken 5 spot kicks, the score remained deadlocked at 3 penalties each. It was now sudden death. Dynamoes' first penalty was well-saved by Ryan Jennings and Sam Petts stepped up with a chance to win the game, which he duly did with a superb kick into the corner of the goal. Poynton now march into the last 16, after a match filled with drama, which was played in the best spirit and much credit must go to Dynamoes for the manner in which they made the match such a memorable occasion. There were great performances all over the park, but it's only fitting that the boy who pulled the game out of the fire for us and also scored his first ever goal, shoud be awarded the Man of the Match accolade, and that was Sam Porter, who was superb throughout the game and the goal capped off a great performance. Well done Sam! Goalscorers (normal time): Dan Jones, Sam Petts, Harry Nicholas, Sean Lyons. Extra time: Sam Porter. Penalty scorers: Jonathan Rockley, Harry Nicholas, Tom O'Gara, Sam Petts (sudden death)
Sunday 6th January 2008 - Poynton FC Under 14's Juniors 4-3 Stockport Junior Blues U14s North - Stockport Metro League (Division Two) As Christmas Day and New Years Day both fell on our training day, we took on top-of-the-league Stockport Junior Blues North after the christmas break wondering how the lack of training would affect this first match of the new year. Within 10 minutes, Junior Blues took the lead and it was the jolt Poynton needed, as after that, the boys took control of the game and quickly equalised through a well-taken goal from Joe Hibbs. The same player added another after 20 minutes and a Dan Jones penalty sent the boys in at the break 3-1 ahead. Poynton were playing the better football and deserved their lead, but in the second half Junior Blues were applying more pressure and made the score 3-2 after 10 minutes of the second period. Joe Clay made it 4-2 for Poynton with a well-taken goal on 20 minutes. Junior Blues then threw everything at us and made it 4-3 and a nervous 10 minutes of the game finished with Poynton just shading the contest 4-3. Performances of note from Sam Porter, Joe Hibbs and Sean Lyons, but the Man of the Match award was given to George Firmin, who played an anchor role just in front of the back four, and his application staved off a very useful Junior Blues attacking force. Well done George!
Sunday 13th January 2008 - Poynton FC Under 14's Juniors 3-3 (4-2 pens.) Cheadle & Gatley U14's 'A' - Stockport Metro Cup (Round 2)
Sunday 3rd February 2008 - Poynton FC U14's Juniors 2-1 Droylsden Juniors U14's- Stockport Metro League (Division Two)
Sunday 24th February 2008 - Great Moor County U14's 'A' 10-2 Poynton FC U14's Juniors - Stockport Metro Cup (Quarter-Final) Poynton travelled to play Great Moor this afternoon to take part in the re-arranged quarter final of the Stockport Metro Cup. From the first whistle, Great Moor went on the offensive and within the first 20 minutes, Poynton were 4-0 down and even though the boys played decent football at times, Great Moor took advantage of errors made by Poynton. A goal was pegged back from James Quinn, but the half time score ended 6-1 to Great Moor. Poynton were still trying to play passing football and the only real difference between the sides was Great Moor's physical presence, hunger for the ball and the will to win. The boys plugged away in the second half, but it was always an uphill battle and although James Quinn scored another well-taken goal, the final score ended Great Moor 10 Poynton 2. Although obviously Great Moor are a very, very good team, Poynton did show flashes of excellent football at times and made it clear that they too had lots of good attributes to bring to the game. In general, the team must become more physical and go the extra mile if they are to compete against similar teams if promotion comes our way at the end of the season. Some excellent performances of note from Conor Young, George Firmin and James Quinn, but Man of the Match was Tom O'Gara for his never-say-die spirit and complete commitment.
Sunday 2nd March 2008 - Woodley Albion U14's 1-4 Poynton FC U14's Juniors - Stockport Metro League (Division Two) Poynton travelled to Woodley Albion this morning to resume league fixtures after almost a months' layoff. From the first whistle Poynton went on the attack, and this set the tone of the game, with Poynton applying the pressure and Woodley striving to defend their goal. After numerous attempts on the Woodley goal, the deadlock was broken by Dan Jones with a low shot. Shortly before, what looked like a good goal by the same player was dubiously ruled out. The boys kept the upper hand and at half time the score remained 1-0 to the visitors. The wind in the second half was in Poynton's faces and it enabled Woodley to come more into the game and after 10 minutes, they drew level with a scrappy effort from a goalmouth scramble. This seemed to spur Poynton on as the boys quickly hit back and went 2-1 ahead from a fantastic long-range effort from Conor Young, which Conor seems to make his trademark. When he scores they are spectacular! Only a few minutes later, Joe Clay slipped his marker and rounded the keeper to make it 3-1 and with 5 minutes to go, James Quinn neatly scored the 4th to sew up the victory for Poynton. To summarise, this was a well-earned victory, especially in the second half, where Poynton pulled out all the stops and played some excellent football. Overall, an excellent team performance, but the man of the match on this occasion was Harry Nicholas for his drive, enthusiasm and sheer workrate. Well done Harry.
Sunday 9th March 2008 - Burnage Rangers U14's 1-3 Poynton FC U14's Juniors - Stockport Metro League (Division Two) Poynton were on the road again this morning, this time travelling to Burnage Rangers. The pitch would play a major role in this game due to the heavy overnight rain leaving the surface with puddles and plenty of mud, but still just about playable. From the off Poynton went on the offensive and pinned Burnage back in their own penalty area. After 10 minutes, Harry Nicholas broke the deadlock with a well-taken shot high into the net from just inside the area. Poynton continued to press and many chances went begging, but it was Burnage who ended the stronger and equalised in the dying seconds of the half. The second period saw Poynton again applying all the pressure, and Tom Sheedy did well on the right before crossing for Andrzej Heath to sidefoot home from close range. Burnage had the odd breakaway, but in general Poynton held most of the possession and good fortune smiled upon them when a George Firmin cross looped over the keeper and into the net for Poynton's 3rd. Seconds later at the final whistle, the match ended with victory to Poynton, 3-1. Performances of note from George Firmin, Mitchell Main, Joe Hibbs and Tom Sheedy, but the Man of the Match went to Sean Lyons, for a superb performance at right back, an unfamiliar role for him but a tremendous effort, well done Sean!
Sunday 16th March 2008 - Mountfield Rovers U14's 3-5 Poynton FC U14's Juniors - Stockport Metro League (Division Two) Poynton were away again this morning, but a mix-up at
the opponent's pitch meant that the scheduled away fixture against Mountfield
was hurriedly re-arranged at an available pitch at Deva, effectively
becoming a home tie for Poynton.
Sunday 13th April 2008 - Poynton FC U14's Juniors 3-3 Apollo Juniors U14's - Stockport Metro League (Division Two) As the season entered its final quarter, Poynton played their 16th match at home this morning against Apollo Juniors. From the first whistle, Poynton seemed to be putting the opponents under pressure, but looked vulnerable whenever Apollo broke away, and indeed, it was Apollo who broke the deadlock on 15 minutes. With 3 players missing through injury, Poynton were finding things difficult and it was on the stroke of half time before the score was levelled after a 15 yard effort from Dan Jones went in off the far post. The boys looked below par in the second half, and it was no surprise when, after decent pressure, Apollo took the lead after 10 minutes. 5 minutes later they extended their lead and Poynton were up against it, however some battling back saw Poynton pull a goal back through James Quinn and in the dying seconds, Dan Jones scored his second and the equaliser to tie the scores at 3 each. Performances of note from Joe Clay, Sam Porter, and Dan Jones, but the Man of the Match on this occasion went to Tom Sheedy for his excellent work on the right side of midfield. Tom beat his man regularly and put over some wicked crosses and for his effort and application, fully deserves the title.
Tuesday 15th April 2008 - Bollington United U14's 5-2 Poynton FC U14's Juniors - Stockport Metro League (Division Two) Poynton travelled to Bollington this evening, hoping to improve on Sunday's 3-3 draw, but Bollington put Poynton under pressure early on and after Poynton had failed to clear a high ball, the home side took the lead after 5 minutes. Poynton found themselves 2 down minutes later after again, failing to clear a hopeful ball into the area. The teams looked fairly evenly matched and good pressure from Poynton finally paid off when Sean Lyons scored from close range on the stroke of half time. The second period saw Poynton pressing forward and some good pressure almost paid off with Joe Clay having 2 efforts cleared off the line, but the home side again broke away and increased their lead to 3-1. Poynton fought back bravely and a great effort from Harry Nicholas found the net from 20 yards out. Poynton were pressing forward but a series of injuries meant that they were vulnerable and Bollington scored twice more before the final whistle, the game ending 5-2 to the home side. James Quinn had a fantastic game, as did Conor Young and Tom O'Gara, but the Man of the Match was Harry Nicholas for a wonderful display in midfield. Harry has so many positive attributes to his game and he gave a commanding performance in the middle of the park. Well done Harry!
Sunday 27th April 2008 - Reddish North End U14's 6-3 Poynton FC U14's Juniors - Stockport Metro League (Division Two) Poynton travelled to Reddish North End this morning for the return fixture, after last week's poor defeat. With 5 players missing, the chances of a victory did not look good, but in the early stages of the match, the boys gave as good as they got and were unfortunate to go behind after 10 minutes. Minutes later, a good ball from Harry Nicholas sent Joe Clay racing towards goal, and the striker neatly slipped past the keeper to finish and draw the scores level. Reddish immediately hit back and were beginning to take the upper hand. The home side scored twice more before the interval but once again, Joe Clay finished a good move with a rare sweet left foot shot high into the net to make it 4-2 at half time. With players playing out of their usual positions, Poynton were battling very hard indeed and were unfortunate to concede a further goal midway through the second half. With 5 minutes to go, Tom O'Gara picked up the ball and through sheer determination broke through the Reddish defence to make the final score 6-3. This was a vast improvement on last week's poor performance by a make-shift team, who for the majority of the match were reduced to 10 men. Excellent performances by Conor Young, Joe Clay, Sam Petts and Andrzej Heath, but on this occasion the Man of the Match was shared between Joe Hibbs and Tom O'Gara who both played with guts and determination and spurred the rest of the boys on. Well done Joe and Tom! |
