Poynton Football Club was formed in 1893, its full title then being
Poynton Amateurs Football Club, and although there is no trace of
where the members actually played in their formative years, a membership
card for the 1912-13 season reveals that their ground was in fact
Poynton Cricket Club. The same card mentions a few interesting names
amongst the list of Vice Presidents, such as Major General Pack and
the Rev. H.N. Ross. Captain of the team that season was J. Wild and
amongst the teams being played were India Mills, Lindow, Great Moor,
Vernon Amateurs, Waterloo, Christy's Heaviley Sunday School and Handforth
United. The late Jack Birch was a member of the Committee, and he
can be remembered serving the club throughout the sixties.

1960s
The Club was a one team outfit right up to the mid sixties, and had
rented the football pitch at the 'Cricket Club'.
Changing accomodation in those days was the old Baptist Chapel on
Park Lane, and many a Saturday afternoon shopper's head was turned
by the sight of twenty two semi-clad players jogging the distance
between the church and the pitch.
In the early sixties however, the 'Cricket Club' decided it no longer
wanted a football pitch using it's ground as ideas of converting the
pitch to a super hockey pitch gained support.
For the next few seasons the club played at Midway off Barnaby Road,
and one hilarious incident in that period was a cup game at Hyde when
a much weakened Poynton side was 1-4 down, and with ten minutes of
the match remaining Hyde were awarded a corner. As the ball came across,
three Poynton defenders and the goalkeeper jumped for the ball and,
reaching for the 'suspect' crossbar at the same time, brought it crashing
down. The match was of course abandoned and the following week a full
strength Poynton returned to Hyde and won 3-0.
In 1966 the club formed a second team for the first time and joined
the Lancashire & Cheshire League. By this time the 'Cricket Club'
had abandoned it's plans for the pitch and Poynton F.C. was again
allowed to use it. One year later Poynton F.C. was invited to join
the Sports Club as a bonafide section and the foundation was laid
for future progress and expansion. In its second season in the Lancashire
& Cheshire League promotion was well within sight but after a
home draw against Bramhall, the eventual champions, the rot set in
and Poynton missed out.
The 1968-69 season was another near thing and Poynton were giving
more senior teams a headache in cup games before being knocked out
by first division giants East Chorlton.

1970s
Promotion from Division Three was eventually achieved when the Championship
was won in season 1970-71. Also in 1970 the club experimented with
a 6-a-side Competition, won by Hazel Grove. The competition grew in
stature and became an important date in the areas football calender
right up until the early 1990's. Progress continued, and in 1972 a
third team was formed with a fourth being added in 1978.
The aim of the club since joining the Lancashire and Cheshire League
had always been first division football and this goal was realised
at the end of the 1977-78 season when Poynton were promoted as Champions.
The club was then further extended with the formation of a junior
team at under-12's level, playing through to under-16's level, from
which a number of players filtered through to the senior teams.
One very noteworthy result the first team had following their promotion
to Division One was the 10-1 thrashing of Old Standians on their own
ground on October 13th 1979.

1980-1985
In the 1980s Poynton reached the semi-final of the Stockport Senior
Cup in 1980-81, only to be beaten by Woodley after two replays and
in 1983-84 the second team won the Lancashire & Cheshire's Wrays
Cup defeating Adswood Amateurs in the final 4-1.
On 1st May 1985 Poynton at last won the Stockport Senior Cup beating
Adswood 1-0 at Edgeley Park.

Over the next twenty years the junior section grew from two teams
into it's current size. There are now nine boys mini-soccer teams
playing from Under 7's to Under 10's, four girls mini soccer teams
at Under 8's, Under 10's, Under 11's and Under 12's, one 9-a-side
girls team at Under 14's and five 11-a-side boys teams from Under
11's to Under 16's.
The Club also run three senior sides on a Saturday. The 1st XI play
in the Mid-Cheshire League Division 1 and finished runners-up to Middlewich
Town in 2003-2004. The 2nd XI (Reserves) play in the Mid-Cheshire
League Reserves Division and the 3rd XI play in the East Cheshire
Combined League. There is also a Youth team, which runs from the senior
teams and enters the Cheshire Youth Cup and the Manchester U18s County
Cup. The Club also run a Sunday team, which plays in the Macclesfield
& District Sunday League.
